After Bayern Munich announced the signing of Mario Gotze, many football fans started to wonder who would be chosen to replace the German star at Borussia Dortmund.

The news of the Gotze transfer came at the wrong time as Borussia Dortmund was only days away from facing Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinals. It was announced the deal would make Gotze the most expensive signing in Bundesliga history as Bayern is set to meet Gotze’s release clause this summer, believed to be worth 37 millions euros.

Danish superstar Christian Eriksen is one of Ajax’s most prized possessions and in a recent interivew, he announced an interest in transferring to Borussia as Gotze’s replacement. Borussia and Ajax met in the group stage of the current edition of the Champions League, with the Germans winning both games. He is under contract at Ajax until the summer of 2014.

The 21-year-old has been playing for the club since 2008, making his first-team debut in 2010. Eriksen has also featured for Denmark, playing with the team in the 2010 World Cup, the under-21 European Championship, and Euro 2012. The Ajax star also won the 2011 Johan Cruyff Award, which is given to the Eredivise’s Young Player of the Year.

In other news, Borussia Dortmund have agreed to a new contract with their star goalkeeper, Roman Weidenfeller. The new contract will keep the goalkeeper at Signal Iduna Park until the summer of the 2016.

Weidenfeller has played a big part in Dortmund’s journey to Wembley, making a good amount of clutch saves against Real Madrid in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semifinal.

Borussia Dortmund is set to meet Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League Final on May 25.
